Wondering if chiropractic is safe during pregnancy? Here's what prenatal chiropractic care looks like, when to start, and how it helps with back pain, baby positioning, and preparing for labor.
Pregnancy changes your body in incredible ways — but those changes can also bring discomfort, pain, and anxiety about labor. Prenatal chiropractic care helps your body adapt so you can carry comfortably and prepare for the birth you want.
Is Chiropractic Safe During Pregnancy?
Yes. Chiropractic care during pregnancy is widely recognized as safe and effective. The American Pregnancy Association recommends it, and many OBGYNs and midwives actively refer their patients to chiropractors who specialize in prenatal care.
At Trinity Life Chiropractic, I hold the Webster Technique certification through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). This is a specialized certification for prenatal chiropractic care that requires additional training beyond chiropractic school.
The adjustments used during pregnancy are gentle and specifically adapted for the pregnant body. There is no high-velocity twisting or cracking. We use pregnancy pillows and a table with a belly drop-away section so you can lie face-down comfortably, even in your third trimester.
What Happens During a Prenatal Visit?
Your first visit starts with a thorough conversation about your pregnancy, how you're feeling, any pain or discomfort, your birth plan, and your goals for care. We want to understand your full picture before we touch anything.
Next, we perform INSiGHT scans to objectively measure how pregnancy is affecting your nervous system. These scans are completely safe for both mom and baby — they use surface electrodes similar to an EKG.
Then we perform a physical assessment of your pelvis, spine, and surrounding muscles. We're looking for misalignments (subluxations), pelvic imbalance, and tension patterns that could affect your comfort and your baby's positioning.
If we find areas that need attention, we perform a gentle adjustment. Most moms describe the experience as comfortable and relaxing. Many tell us it's the best they've felt all week.
Common Reasons Pregnant Women Seek Chiropractic Care
Lower back pain. This is the number one reason pregnant women come to us. As your belly grows, your center of gravity shifts forward, placing increased stress on the lower back. Your lumbar spine curves more, your pelvis tilts, and the muscles in your back work overtime to compensate. Regular adjustments keep the spine and pelvis aligned so the load is distributed more evenly.
Sciatica. The sciatic nerve runs through the pelvis. When the pelvis is misaligned or when the piriformis muscle (which sits right on top of the sciatic nerve) becomes tight due to pelvic imbalance, the result is shooting, burning pain down the back of the leg. Webster Technique adjustments directly address pelvic alignment and often bring significant relief.
Round ligament pain. Those sharp, stabbing pains in the lower abdomen are caused by the ligaments that support the uterus being stretched under uneven tension. When the pelvis is balanced, the tension on these ligaments is more even, and the pain decreases.
Breech or posterior baby positioning. While we don't manually turn babies, the Webster Technique restores pelvic balance, giving the baby more room to move into the optimal head-down, anterior position. Research shows that 82% of breech presentations resolved when the mother received Webster Technique care.
Preparing for labor. A balanced pelvis means a more efficient birth canal. Studies show that women under chiropractic care during pregnancy experience 25-31% shorter labor times on average. Fewer interventions, less pain, better outcomes.
General discomfort. Rib pain, hip pain, difficulty sleeping, headaches, heartburn — these are all common pregnancy complaints that respond well to chiropractic care because they're often driven by structural changes and nervous system stress.
When Should You Start?
The ideal time is during the first trimester, but it's never too late. Starting early allows us to establish pelvic balance before the baby is large enough to be affected by any imbalances. That said, many of our patients find us in the second or third trimester when pain becomes hard to ignore, and they still see excellent results.
We typically recommend weekly visits during pregnancy, with the frequency adjusted based on your individual needs and how your body responds to care.
What Moms Are Saying
Don't just take our word for it. Here's what Jessie, one of our prenatal patients, shared:
"I started going to Trinity Life Chiropractic at 20 weeks pregnant when I was dealing with constant back pain. Starting care with Dr. O'Brien made such a difference. My mobility improved, my pain decreased, and from 20 weeks on I was able to enjoy a largely pain-free pregnancy."
